  1. Harvard Trauma Questionnaire (HTQ)
Source: Harvard Program in Refugee Trauma (HPRT)
    Format: Text
Annotation: The Harvard Trauma Questionnaire (HTQ) is a checklist written by the Harvard Program in Refugee Trauma, similar in design to the Hopkins Symptom Checklist-25 (HSCL-25). It inquires about a variety of trauma events, as well as the emotional symptoms considered to be uniquely associated with trauma. Currently, there are six versions of this questionnaire. The Vietnamese, Cambodian, and Laotian versions of the HTQ were written for use with Southeast Asian refugees. The Japanese version was written for survivors of the 1995 Kobe earthquake. The Croatian Veterans' version was written for soldiers who survived the wars in the Balkans, and the Bosnian version was written for civilian survivors of that conflict. The first 16 trauma symptom items, derived from the DSM-IV (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 4th Edition) post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) criteria, are the same in every version of the HTQ. This resource was identified by the NIH Disaster Research Response Program (DR2) for researchers looking for pre- and post-disaster data collection instruments.

Ease of Use in Disaster Setting: Difficult
    Population: Adults Only
Length: There are four total parts; the number of questions differs across populations and translations because they have been modified to apply to specific cultures and events. Part I contains 17 traumatic life events and has been expanded in later versions to contain between 46 and 82 events. Part II and Part III are open-ended questions about injury and details about traumatic events, and Part IV consists of 30 trauma symptom items.
    Time to Complete: Not specified/given
    Administered by: Lay Interviewer, Specialist/Doctor/Expert
Special Considerations: The official site for this tool states that the screening instruments should be administered by health care workers under the supervision and support of a psychiatrist, medical doctor, and/or psychiatric nurse. They were not designed to be used as a self-report, and no checklist can replace the role of a mental health professional.

  2. Hopkins Symptom Checklist: Hopkins Symptom Checklist (HSC) 25
Source: Harvard Program in Refugee Trauma (HPRT)
    Format: Text
Annotation: The Hopkins Symptom Checklist (HSC) contains items which are representative of the symptom configurations commonly observed among outpatients. It is scored on five underlying symptom dimensions: somatization, obsessive-compulsive, interpersonal sensitivity, anxiety, and depression. This measure has been used as a screening tool in some studies. Version lengths include the HSC-25, HSC-58, and HSC-90. The 90-item HSC is derived from the Symptom Checklist-90. This resource was identified by the NIH Disaster Research Response Program (DR2) for researchers looking for pre- and post-disaster data collection instruments.

Ease of Use in Disaster Setting: Easy to Moderate, depending on version
    Flesch-Kincaid Reading Level: Grade HSC-58 = 6.1
